If you were to take a look at Alysse Dalessandros social media, you may think – wow this woman is bold, creative and inspiring. She is all of these things but we were able to sit down with her and dig a little deeper with Alysse.
She actually started writing about fashion and making her own jewelry in high school. She then went on to earn a dual degree in Journalism and Gender Studies at University and the fashion design and blogging took a back burner for a while. After a few years Alysse got back to making jewelry for herself and that͛s when it all took off.
She was wearing some of her own designs that she had made after studying metalsmithing at a local college. They were spotted by a vintage store owner who suggested that Alysse sell her designs. Eventually, Alysse was selling her designs in the Chicago area and on Etsy. She grew to include T-shirts and other clothing and business keeps growing. Etsy was a great place to start but the brand Ready To Stare moved onto its own website.
This success sent Alysse back to one of her loves – writing. She used her contacts and followers from her designs to speak out about the issues that were important to her and in May 2014 the #StareStyle blog was born. It gave the audience ideas on how to wear the designs that Alysse had produced and then moved on to being a powerful voice in the body positive movement.
As women we are supposed to make our fashion choices based on the models we see in magazines and on catwalks. We have to imagine what those designs would look like when scaled to a different size in order to see what we might look like. It is an unrealistic way of making the decisions on what to wear. Alysse Dalessandro puts out amazing cookbooks that help readers see how different fashions can be worn in different ways by different women. She says, I love the idea of changing the dressing room experience and removing the blame that we place on our bodies when clothes don’t fit. Its time to see change!
