Fitness Friday! Let’s Salsa!

As a long time salsa enthusiast, I often hear, I’ve always wanted to try that or they look so sexy. And I’m left to wonder: So what’s stopping you?

I hope the following advice motivates you to hit the dance floor and set yourself in motion with confidence by introducing you to a fun, new option to keep fit.

Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for dance classes:

Is the instructor experienced?

When starting my search 14 years ago, I wanted to find an instructor who would teach me proper technique and styling. That person should be friendly and patient as having an experienced instructor that can recognize your learning style will make you feel comfortable and confident.

Do I need a partner?

Absolutely NOT! When I started dancing, I went solo and it actually benefited me. In my experience, dancing with a variety of partners who each had their own unique style enhanced my own abilities.

Does this studio have “socials?”

Finding a studio that has regular socials or outings is a great way to meet new people and to practice what you have been learning. Building relationships with people that have the same interests will encourage you to continue dancing and keep up this fun and healthy hobby.

What do I wear?

While the footwear may vary on the type of dance, for salsa it depends on the studio. Some may require professional dancing shoes, while others may encourage you to wear runners because they provide comfort and a better grip. As for clothing, wear whatever makes you feel good about yourself, whether it’s jeans, a dress, or sweats. I usually go with breathable, comfortable active wear so I can get the most out of the session because I treat it as a workout.

Personally, salsa has given me more confidence and has made me feel great about my curves, especially when they’re swinging to the music…

WON’T YOU JOIN ME ON THE DANCE FLOOR?
