Do you ever wish that life came with an instruction manual?  That there really was an “easy” button you could push to make all of the stress, overwhelm and uncertainty just disappear?

Some days I feel like that too. Days where I just want a break.   When I feel like that I ask myself a question.  A very important question that quickly puts me back into the driver’s seat of my life.  A simple question that helps provide me with a roadmap for where I want to go.  This easy to use question can be used in pretty much all areas of your life in a multitude of different situations.  The question I ask myself is this, “What do you want?”  Four little words with a lot of impact.

Let me share with you an exercise in how to use this question.

I want you to imagine a situation in your life that is not going the way you want it to.  A situation where you might be feeling tired, cranky and stressed out.  Perhaps you feel like there is too much to do, not enough time and not enough money.

Step 1:  Ask yourself, “What do you want?”   Remember that this is all about you.  What do YOU want.  This is not what you should want, what other people say would be good for you, this is only about YOU.

Step 2: Write down everything that comes up

You might have a list similar to this:

I want more time for myself

I want more clarity about what I want to do with my life

I want to make a difference.

I want to eliminate some of the things I have to do everyday

I want some help

I want an extra $500 a month

I want to sleep in once a week

I want to work less

I want to feel more calm and relaxed

I want to go on vacation

I want to work out 3 times a week

I want to be my own boss

Write down whatever comes up for you!  What do you want?

Step 3:  Decide on one thing you can implement now.  What action can you take to move you one step closer to what you want?  Write the action step down.

Step 4: Now do it.   It is imperative that you take that first step.

Step 5:  Get support.  Who do you have in your life that can support you and help you?  One of the best things you can do for yourself is to build a support team.  Find someone who you know is 100% in your corner.  Someone who has your back.  This is the person you want to share your “want” with.  Let them know your action step.  Allow them to be part of your journey.  It is way more fun when you have someone to share it with.

When we start to focus on the things that we want, particularly when they are stated in the positive, we start to see possibility.  We start to move out of stress and overwhelm and can find solutions. When we add an action step to that, magic happens.  If you use this process on a regular basis you will be amazed at how quickly you begin to move yourself out of feeling overwhelmed, stressed and not knowing what to do.   For me it has become an almost automatic reaction and I know that with time and practice it will become the same for you.
