Kari Anderson - Green Mountain Fox RunKari Anderson, DBH, LCMHC, CEDS, is the Executive Director at Green Mountain at Fox Run and leads the Women’s Center for Binge and Emotional Eating. Green Mountain at Fox Run was started in 1973 by registered dietitian Thelma Wayler, who recognized that dieting and food restriction were not in the best interests of her clients, and her motto of “Eat well. Move joyfully. Think positive” remains Green Mountain’s today.

Many of the women who come to Green Mountain face health challenges such as diabetes, PCOS, orthopedic issues, and more. Many of these challenges have been exacerbated or even resulted from years of dieting/restrictive eating that drove a yo-yo approach to eating well, exercising for health, and managing stress. Unrealistic expectations regarding body size are also an important part of this. The belief and value that a person’s worth is dictated by their body size – a body size that is unrealistic for the vast majority of people – keeps the yo-yo going.

Kari says, “We work to help women adopt an approach to eating, exercise, and stress management that works for them – that is not only sustainable but actually feels good and keeps them coming back for more. Of course, that is what makes it sustainable. We also help women begin to move away from the negative self-talk that keeps them mired in body loathing and begin to appreciate their bodies for what they do for them.”

Kari’s message for readers? “The most important message that women today need to hear is that if you feel frustration and sometimes shame regarding your failed attempts at controlling your eating behavior or your body, it’s not your fault. There is a lot at play here; it’s complicated. It’s not as simple as eat less and exercise more.  Learn more about the biological, neurological and psychological underpinnings that influence eating behavior and weight. Begin to take back your decisions through mindful awareness regarding how you feed yourself and move your body and, more importantly, how you manage your stress.”
