A dry and itchy scalp is usually a sign that it’s lost too much moisture. This can be due to many different things, ranging from medical conditions to using the wrong shampoo. To help you find relief fast, here are a few home remedies to soothe an itchy scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar

While it may sound crazy, apple cider vinegar (ACV) can help dry and itchy scalps when used correctly. The scalp’s pH is naturally slightly acidic, coming in at about 5.5 pH, and if the pH of your scalp rises and becomes too basic, this can cause irritation. ACV is a weak acetic acid that can help bring your scalp’s pH back to normal. ACV is also antimicrobial, so if a fungus or yeast causes your itching, it can also help tackle that.

To use ACV correctly, dilute two to three tablespoons of it in a cup of warm water, and after shampooing your hair, pour the diluted mixture onto your scalp and massage it in. Leave it on for a few minutes, and then rinse it out completely. If you have naturally dry skin or have wounds or abrasions on your scalp, don’t use this method.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil contains lauric acid and a lot of healthy fats, which means that it can moisturize the skin and treat bacteria or fungi. You don’t have to wash your hair before using coconut oil. All you have to do is warm up one to three tablespoons, depending on how thick your hair is, and massage it into the scalp. Leave it in for half an hour, and then wash it out with shampoo.

It’s important to note that some of these methods involve washing out the product with shampoo. If you find that these methods still don’t help after consistent use, you may need a different shampoo. One of the most common causes of a dry and itchy scalp is the use of harsh shampoos that contain moisture-stripping chemicals. Organic beauty products have a multitude of benefits, and if you’re struggling to find relief, using an organic shampoo with natural ingredients may be the solution.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is high in oleic acid and squalene, both of which moisturize the hair by penetrating deep into the hair shaft and the skin. If you want to treat your scalp, you need only two tablespoons, but if you want to treat your entire head or have long or thick hair, a quarter of a cup is best. You can warm it up if you find it soothing, then massage it deeply into your hair and scalp, wrap it in a clean shower cap, and let it sit for 15 it 30 minutes.

If you want to pair this method with ACV, blend a quarter of a cup of olive oil with one tablespoon of ACV and apply it on your scalp and throughout your hair. Leave it on for 15 minutes, wash it out, and voilà–you have your own customized home remedy to help you relieve an itchy scalp.
