Model Monday – Shatayia

My name is Shatayia and I am from New Jersey trying to make my mark in the Plus Size modeling industry. I was highly influenced by my father and his eclectic style. I always wanted to be a print model especially for Ashley Stewart. As an adolescent, I used to see the pretty full-figured advertised throughout the store sparked my interest and desire to become a model. However, I want to model not only for fashion, but for those who need to see someone just like them. I would love to be an advocate for young girls who suffer with body issues and low self-esteem. I want girls to know no matter your size, you are “Beautiful”. Overall, I started blogging about year ago and my blog is called Plus Size Vixen. It is dedicated to plus size women looking for fabulous outfits for less. From working so hard on my blog I turned it into an upcoming t-shirt line in hopes of raising money to open an empowerment center for young girls.

Congratulations on all of your success as a Plus Size Model.  How did you get started modelling?

I began modeling recently when I was asked by professional friend if I would be interested in modeling for the Ashley Stewart store in Hudson Mall located in my hometown.

What has been your favourite experience thus far – the one you are most proud of?

My favorite experience thus far was modeling for Ashley Stewart store. I was able to conquer my fears and slay the runaway. In that moment, I felt alive and ready to do anything my heart desires.

Just like any craft there is a learning curve – how did you learn how to model – both print and runway if applicable?

I learned how to model by practicing my walk at home and taking tons of pictures then posted them on Instagram. Also, watching America’s Next Top Model gave me some pointers on how to pose and smile in my photos.

Did you have mentors or role models who helped and inspired you along the way?

My role model was my father he loved fashion, trying new trends and dressing outside the box. I am the female version of him. I love taking risk and creating my own trends.

The Plus Size Industry has changed and continues to evolve – how do you think as a model you are able to help make an impact in how the world sees plus size women?

I want the world to see plus size women as just women, period. Dropping the Plus and allowing us o be accepted as the beautiful women we are. There is no distinctive look or size that makes women beautiful. I want to contribute to the evolvement by continuing to bring awareness to little girls whom need to learn body positivity to love themselves no matter the fashion standards of the world.

You exude confidence with every step you take, were you always this confident?  Tell us a little bit about the journey to confidence.

Growing up I was not this confident girl you see today. I was chubby and dark skinned, so I was a target for everyone to make fun of. I did not like my body or skin complexion, I honestly thought I was UGLY. I never told anyone about the negative jokes I kept it to myself and internalize it. Until one day I had long talk with my mother and I finally told her how I felt about my body, skin complexion and other things. From that conversation I remember her saying, “Don’t worry about what others think of you they going to talk about you regardless just give them something to talk about.” Since that day, I live with no cares in the world about anyone’s opinion about me. I am living happily in the skin I am in.

For our readers who are interested in starting a plus model career, what would you suggest are some top tips to get started?

In order to start a career in plus size modeling you must have confidence. Confidence is what comes through your pictures. You must be comfortable with what you’re doing and most importantly in your skin. Everything else will fall into place.

As a model you’ve had the opportunity to wear a variety of different styles, but what would we catch you in on an ‘off duty’ day?  What would you call your fashion sense and how has this evolved through your modelling career?

An off-duty day for me consist of colorful leggings, shirt and sneakers. I love to be comfortable and colorful. My fashion sense is definitely out of the box and different from the norms. I like creating my own trends or spicing up the trends that’s already out. My fashion sense has evolved a little because now I want to know about more runaway styles and upcoming fashion for the next season to put my on twist on them.

What are you some of your favourite places to shop your style?

My favorite places to shop are Unique Thrift store, Ashley Stewart, Fashion to Figure and Rainbows I love these sores they bring my style to life.

What does life look for you outside of the modelling world?

Life outside of modeling world is full of adventure. I am full time grad student, county worker, mommy of one and fashion blogger. I am always busy doing something and its never a dull moment.

Thank you for taking time to chat with us today!  What is one message you would like to leave with our readers today?
