On my 36th birthday, I decided that I would do 36 new things.  I freely explored new foods, novel venues, and different social activities.  Then, it hit me.  I should free my thighs this year!  Between growing up with eczema on the back of my knees and having what I considered “huge thighs”, I had developed a complex about my legs that followed me throughout my adult life.  I had not worn shorts since I was a teenager.

I mentioned my revelation to my friends and they were just as excited as I was.  With their help, I fiercely delivered my THIGHS to the world by way of a photo shoot while wearing a pair of plum-colored shorts!  Forget the fact that I went to three stores and tried on about 20 pairs of shorts.  Forget the tears shed and the feelings of defeat… or how I gave up right before finding the perfect pair and snatching them up in two colors.  I NAILED IT!

Not only did I nail it, but I also learned three important lessons:

  1. Take fashion risks that bring out the best in you!  I have always done the safe thing when it comes to fashion.  Now, I realize how taking a few risks actually brings out my personality in clothing.  Plus, it’s just so much fun!
  2. Face your fears!  Not only face them in fashion, but in your entire life.  I would have never realized how beautiful my legs were had I remained fearful.
  3. Embrace your natural beauty and live out loud!  I believe that I have successfully established a confidence within myself that cannot be broken.  I love the skin I’m in and I plan to demonstrate that every single day.  I only get to do this life thing once.  I’m going to have a little fun with it!
