Meet Kiara! Our Monday Model.
Kiara Sherman was originally featured in our Summer 2017 issue.
Congratulations on all of your success as a Plus Size Model. How did you get started modeling?
I went to an audition in LA and fell in love with modeling and wanted to do more of it.
What has been your favourite experience thus far – the one you are most proud of?
I don’t have just one but my favorite part of modeling would have to be photo shoots and working with other models. I love being around other proud plus size women who support and uplift each other.
Just like any craft, there is a learning curve – how did you learn how to model – both print and runway if applicable?
Practice. I practice my runway walk and I try to do as many fashion shows as I can to gain the experience. I have been working on mastering my angles and my facial expressions in front of the camera.
Did you have mentors or role models who helped and inspired you along the way?
Yes. I have been blessed to meet fellow models who have answered every question I ask and are always willing to give me advice or help. I have mentors who help me as well as tons of support from family.
The Plus Size Industry has changed and continues to evolve – how do you think as a model you are able to help make an impact in how the world sees plus size women?
By loving myself and helping other women do the same. I want to help women be brave enough to be themselves and love themselves just the way they are. That’s how I will make an impact and put my stamp on the industry.
You exude confidence with every step you take, were you always this confident? Tell us a little bit about the journey to confidence.
No, I was not. Modeling has a huge part in helping me come out of my shell and gain so much confidence. Modeling has helped me see my true beauty and has made me fall in love with who I am today. I have spent so many years hating the way I looked, thinking I was too fat and just wished I was skinny. I would always say “when I get skinny, I will do this and this and this.” I was waiting to be skinny so I could live life. I thought that if I just get to be “skinny” I could live a happy life and do so much when in reality I could have been happy and do everything I wanted in the body I had. So now I go for it! If I want to travel, I travel. If I want to dance, I dance. I don’t let my size dictate my happiness.
For our readers who are interested in starting a plus model career, what would you suggest are some top tips to get started?
Reach out to some models you follow or admire. Get out there and go for it, go to as many open call auditions as you can. Don’t compare yourself to other models, everyone has something different to offer.
As a model, you’ve had the opportunity to wear a variety of different styles, but what would we catch you in on an ‘off duty’ day? What would you call your fashion sense and how has this evolved through your modeling career?
On a off duty day, you would catch me wearing a blouse or tank top, blue denim jeans and some sneakers. I just started getting into pumps and heels once I started modeling. Now I catch myself buying them more than sneakers. My fashion sense is all about feeling stylish and comfy. I want to look cute but also be able to function throughout my day.
What are you some of your favourite places to shop your style?
Forever 21, JCPenney, and Old Navy.
What does life look for you outside of the modeling world?
My life outside of modeling is wonderful. I love to spend time with my family and friends. I work, go to church, love watching football, and love eating new foods and trying new things. My life is plus in many ways not just the tags on my clothes.
