BBW in the Room

LaQuinta Davis

Congratulations on all of your success as a Plus Size Model. How did you get started modelling?

The BBW in the Room was founded by Me LaQuinta Davis as known as DivaBigg, which is also my company name, The Company was started for two reasons; because I wanted to show the everyday plus-size woman her inner beauty and help her develop/channel her outer model, to carry with her daily and also I wanted to take back ownership and the negative power of the word Fat. It is my goal to remove the negative stigma with that would and make it a badge of Pride.

What has been your favourite experience thus far – the one you are most proud of?

Sept 16, 2016, my first FAT PRIDE show, “THE BBW IN THE ROOM 2017”

Just like any craft there is a learning curve – how did you learn how to model – both print and runway if applicable?

I have a model coach that work with the ladies throughout their growth process, she helps the ladies with the walk, posing, and show preparation. We also participate in several shoot and smaller shows throughout the year to get them prepared for our big show.

Did you have mentors or role models who helped and inspired you along the way?

Yes, my mentor Mr. Anthony Wilson Sr often has to help me see the other views of life and how being different and bringing a fresh perspective or bold point of view to the table, can get the door closed in your face by the fashion industry. He helps me to appreciate the journey and not take the “Nos” so personal.

The Plus Size Industry has changed and continues to evolve – how do you think as a model you are able to help make an impact in how the world sees plus size women?

My group works extremely hard to push the boundaries of what is acceptable in the plus-size community. We sometimes wear little to no clothing to send a message and other times we wear our own clothing line of body positive fashionably cut t-shirt, that have a none apologetic message on them. Either way, we wear it all proudly, our clothes or lack thereof, help to further push our FAT PRIDE MOVEMENT! We believe the plus-size body is a sexy canvas of art and we display it in a variety of ways. The plus-size body is not meant to be hided but displayed tastefully for its beauty and uniqueness.

You exude confidence with every step you take, were you always this confident? Tell us a little bit about the journey to confidence.

Some of the ladies have been confident from day one that I met them; others have built their confidence over our training process and being a part of our team. The journey is different for each of our ladies!

For our readers who are interested in starting a plus model career, what would you suggest are some top tips to get started?

Practice! Practice! Practice! Work on your walk, posing, and face, if it feels uncomfortable and wrong it’s probably right and if it feels right it probably wrong. Some of the best face and poses feel really awkward and uncomfortable.

As a model you’ve had the opportunity to wear a variety of different styles, but what would we catch you in on an ‘off duty’ day? What would you call your fashion sense and how has this evolved through your modelling career?

Lane Bryant, Rebdoll, Torrid TJmaxx, Rainbow, you name it, we wear it. Our style is edge raw beauty. We consider ourselves fashion trend setters of what we like to call NAKED- FAT.

What are you some of your favourite places to shop your style?

We like to pair our DivaBigg shirt with the following: Rebdoll, Lane Bryant, Torrid, GS Love.

What does life look for you outside of the modelling world?

This group of models consist of architects, chefs, nurses, IT women, sales associates and most importantly mothers! We’re everyday women fighting to make a difference in how the world views us!

Thank you for taking time to chat with us today! What is one message you would like to leave with our readers today?

Love yourself despite what the world has to say! People often hate what they don’t understand, but keep being you and make no apology for it!
