Fitness Friday- 5 Signs of Overtraining
Joseph Bradley Photography

The human body will give you signs that something may not be functioning properly. Last spring, I had my first bout of overtraining. I was training hard—four to five days of high-intensity training per week and sometimes even twice per day. Here are 5 Signs of Overtraining that you can look for.

My body started to feel very run down where walking up a set of stairs became difficult. I was completely out of energy, mentally and physically, and experiencing headaches almost daily. My doctor ran several blood tests last March. The blood tests came back with high creatinine level, 400 points too high—and low vitamin D levels. He suspected that I had a rheumatology disease such as lupus or fibromyalgia based on my symptoms. I even had an MRI, which came back clear.

My doctor immediately referred me to a rheumatologist, and I began several more tests, including x-rays. All of my tests came back normal, and the conclusion was overtraining and dehydration! My muscles were breaking down in such a way that it was causing my body to experience life-changing symptoms.

We often ignore signs of overtraining because we want to do more and achieve more. We want to keep moving forward because of determination and persistence. Unfortunately, more is not always better.

There are 5 signs for you to look for that indicate when you need to take a break:

1. Headache

2. Muscle Pain

3. Chronic Fatigue

4. Flu-Like Symptoms

5. Urine color.

Your body will always give you signs when too much is too much. Just Listen.
